One Of Man's Best Friends: The Leaf Blower

Chilly weather, football, and earlier sunsets are indicators that Fall has arrived. Another symptom of the Fall is, of course, trees losing their leaves. Just when you put away the lawnmower, thankful to scratch one “honey-do” chore off of the list, another one emerges: leaf raking!

Having to pull yourself away from the football game for a little while on a Saturday or Sunday in order to go out and actually perform this rather mundane duty is not something you really look forward to. But fortunately, there are some pretty industrious people in this world who have made this process much easier with the leaf blower.

These handy machines come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Here are a few tips for choosing the proper leaf blower for your yard:

• The power level of your leaf blower should coincide with the size of your yard.

o A hand-held electric leaf blower is just fine for a smaller job.
o A gas-powered hand-held or backpack blower for larger jobs.
o A gas-powered walk-behind machine for huge jobs.

• Gas blowers are heavier and noisier than electric blowers, but are more powerful.
• Gas blowers eliminate the need for a restrictive power cord.
• Electric blowers don't give off exhaust fumes.

So, there are pros and cons to each type of machine. Weigh all the factors, including the size of your yard and your physical capabilities, and decide on the model that suits you best.

There are many reputable companies out there who manufacture and sell good, solid leaf-blowing equipment; Echo, Toro, and Black & Decker, to name several. Regardless of the model you choose, you'll always want to read your owner's manual before you begin to use your machine.

Your owner's manual should also highlight proper leaf blower maintenance and cleaning should become a habit. Regardless of whether you have top-of-the-line equipment or not, failure to keep your machine clean and serviced will eventually have you looking for a new leaf blower.

There's always a “troubleshooting” section within any manual, but if this doesn't resolve an issue you might be having with your leaf blower, make sure you have a plan. Find a reliable yard machine repair outfit which is experienced with your particular brand of equipment. In other words, they might specialize in, say, Echo leaf blower repair, but maybe they're not so quick to service the product of a less popular brand. So find the best available repair shop for your particular brand.

Hey, we still can't totally avoid having to do yard work, but those fine individuals responsible for inventing the leaf blower have made our goal of re-connecting with the couch or recliner as quickly as possible much easier to meet. Choose your leaf blower wisely!
